Knowledge Integration
Create property development and investment opportunities in the form of "real world" land and property projects
This program and the professors that teach it is invaluable due to the real world experience we are exposed to. We are also required to take a couple classes that get us as close to real world as possible before we graduate. These classes are our professional internship we do over a summer and the capstone course we take our last semester. We must use everything that we have learned in the MLPD program to complete these courses to the best of our ability and represent the degree in a professional manner.
I completed my professional internship with Brookfield Residential in their Austin, TX office. I got the unique experience to be exposed to all their departments during the summer (Housing, Marketing, and Land Development). I helped each department with different projects during the summer. I was exposed to legal documents/meetings, branding, sustainable practices, financial modeling, construction, document and application approval, city/district meetings and paperwork, design, material pay applications/budgeting, market analysis, community involvement, and much more. Brookfield Residential is an amazing company with a great culture. I am thankful I got the opportunity to build my landscape architecture and land development knowledge with this internship. I go into more detail below and on my Critical Thinking page
In my current capstone course, eight classmates and myself get the unique opportunity to select our own group project location to create a development that shows off the knowledge we have gained up to this point. We decided on the Post Oak Mall in College Station, TX as a redevelopment opportunity. We believe this project has potential to be more successful due to its location and surrounding demographic. To complete this project we need to complete market analysis, financial feasibility, redesign layouts, demolition and construction budget and time management, and branding. We also can take opportunities to invite guest lectures to give us their unique insight and go on field trips to similar developments in nearby cities like Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.
