SKILLS AND VALUES
Stewardship and Ethics
Demonstrate resource stewardship and professional ethical behavior
This concept has been instilled in me from my upbringing, through my undergraduate degree, and reintroduced in the MLPD program. My parents always taught me to lead by example and to leave an area better than how I found it. This was also an important concept when it came to family camping trips where we had to be mindful of the nature around us and to not, literally, stray from the beaten path.
One of my fears coming into the MLPD program was that this would not be an important topic in my subjects and that all the classes would be surrounded by the mentality to make a quick buck. Luckily though, my professors find this value just as important as teaching us the other areas of real estate development.
One of the classes that covers this the best is LDEV 671 (Sustainable Development) where I read a unique book named Cradle to Cradle. My academic review of the book is below. I had never seen a book quite like this one. The author, William McDonough, found the concept of sustainability so important that he had the book made from a recycled plastic. This book could be dunked in water and be perfectly fine. The book was the first stepping stone into what this class would be covering about the sustainability dividend.
